The Worldwide Market for High-Definition TV Equipment & Services – 2008 Edition
Executive Summary
The Worldwide Market for HDTV Equipment
IMS Research expects total worldwide HDTV households to increase at an average annual rate of 33.8% during the next five years, reaching 255 million households at the end of 2013. The DTH platform is expected to be the market leader with 38.1% of these households. Cable is expected to follow second with 26.5% of households, and IPTV third with 12.3%. The non-broadcast video segment is forecast to grow rapidly due to declining prices of blue-laser devices, especially late in the forecast, while the availability of titles on Blu-ray Disc continues to increase. Decreased download times of HD content due to infrastructure upgrades and usage of more efficient compression technologies will also have a significant impact on this segment. Worldwide revenues for all bluelaser devices are forecast to reach $46.3 billion in 2013, of which new drives in PCs are expected to account for 64.3% that year. Also in 2013, combined worldwide annual revenues for HD STBs, HD DVRs, and HDTV sets are forecast to reach $107.8 billion.

Important points to note:
- • The Americas region leads the world in demand for HDTV services with an estimated 20 million households receiving HD programming at the end of 2007. The US is the principle driver behind this uptake, comprising 91% of these households with Canada accounting for 6.5%.
• The main driver behind adoption of HD programming and HDTV products in the Asia-Pacific region has been Japan’s progressive strategy of introducing HD via satellite and then following with DTT.
• HDTV service and product adoption has been relatively slow in Europe compared to that of the Americas.
• While IMS Research expects Europe to continue trailing the Americas in terms of HDTV adoption, it is likely that the region will experience a significant increase in HDTV service uptake during the next five years.
• The Blu-ray Disc equipment market is expected to see strong growth in blue-laser drive shipments in new PCs during the next five years, due to declining notebook prices and increased household usage of the PC as a media hub. Game consoles are expected to comprise a considerable percentage of this revenue, estimated at nearly 25% at the end of 2009. However, they will have a diminishing impact throughout the remainder of the forecast as prices of stand-alone blue-laser players continue to fall and as blue-laser drives in PCs gain significant market penetration.
- • HD DVR shipments reached an estimated 11.9 million in 2007, representing 55.3% of all HD box shipments for that year. It is expected that HD DVR shipments will continue to rise rapidly throughout the forecast, reaching 77.5% market penetration on a worldwide basis in 2013.
• HDTV set shipments are forecast to reach over 140 million units in 2013, with 1080p sets accounting for majority of shipments starting in 2009. The vast majority of HDTV sets shipped during the forecast are expected to be LCD. IMS Research forecasts 39.6% annual growth in LCD shipments, reaching an estimated 123.6 million units in 2013.
