IBM partners with Kaltura to power Turner's multiscreen play in Latin America

Tuesday, Feb 24, 2015

Over-the-top service provider Kaltura and IBM are providing platform and infrastructure support to Turner Broadcasting as it launches an authenticated multiscreen service in Latin America and Brazil. The partnership is IBM's first hybrid cloud services foray into the media and entertainment industry, according to The Street.

Kaltura is powering the OTT delivery component of Turner's service, while IBM is hosting the service on its Softlayer cloud infrastructure.

Turner Latin America began offering its multiscreen service through pay-TV partners in the region on Feb. 22, live-streaming the Academy Awards ceremony. For subscribers located in the 40 countries in which Turner distributes its content, live and on-demand programming is available in Spanish and Portuguese.

IBM and Kaltura made the official announcement on Feb. 23 at IBM's Interconnect Conference in Las Vegas.

The dual components of this three-way partnership have to do largely with providing flexibility in the fast-shifting video world. IBM boasts 40 data centers worldwide, allowing Turner to increase its streaming capacity as needed. Meanwhile, Kaltura has provided enterprise-class OTT television services for several years and has the expertise to manage Turner's video resources via IBM's cloud service.

"We are excited about our innovative TV Everywhere offering," said Whit Richardson, EVP of distribution and marketing at Turner Latin America, in the release. "Kaltura and IBM are providing us with a highly advanced platform, which assures we deliver the premium standard of service our customers expect."
