Radio station KWME 92.7, licensed to Wellington, Kan., which has broadcast Panther football games for years, has announced they will add other Derby sports to their broadcast lineup throughout the year.
Longtime owner of KWME 92.7 FM and KLEY AM/FM Gordon Johnson recently sold the stations to Rocking M Media based in Manhattan, Kan. Principles of the company are Monte and Doris Miller and their sons, Christopher and Quinn Miller, and Christopher’s son, Cale Miller. The company owns over 20 stations in Kansas.
Johnson previously worked in conjunction with DHS, where students in business classes and organizations over the years coordinated selling the advertising that ran during DHS football game broadcasts. The new ownership has discontinued that relationship with Derby High School but plans to broadcast additional sports beyond football on the station.
Longtime announcers and Derby residents Doyle Phillips and Kevin Payne will continue to broadcast the football games this season for the new owners. A station spokesman indicated that other announcers on staff may do the additional sporting events after football.
KWME plans to broadcast Derby boys and girls varsity basketball games. They also plan to carry some DHS spring sports in the spring.
