Uefa European Championship To Be Broadcast By NOW TV

Thursday, Apr 28, 2016

NOW TV appears to have struck the latest blow in the battle over paid television soccer broadcasts with the announcement that it will broadcast the forthcoming 2016 European Championship hosted by France.

There was speculation LeEco, which was reported to have spent a staggering US$600 million to grab the English Premier League from Now TV for the next three seasons, would also broadcast the month-long soccer extravaganza which begins in June.

Now TV said on Wednesday its subscribers could watch all 51 matches live of the tournament contested by 24 European nations. A one-off Euro and Copa America event pass, costing HK$700, will allow viewers to watch both events. For existing customers, there will be a discount price or even at no additional charge, depending on their contract agreement with Now TV.

However, it is believed other television channels may also broadcast the tournament as Now TV does not have exclusive rights from the service provider.

“We are also discussing with the service provider to see if the Euro 2016 can be watched through our channels,” said a TVB source. “Not only TVB, other companies can also broadcast the tournament provided they pay the right price to the service provider.”

The Euro 2016 will, for the first time, be contested by 24 nations in six groups. The top two in each group and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the round of 16 when it becomes a knockout competition. Host France will meet Romania in group A on June 10 as the curtain raiser while the final is slated for July 10.

The 2016 Centennial Copa America features 16 teams across North, South and Central America with the United States as the host. They will take on Colombia as the curtain raiser on June 3, with the final set for June 26.
