The Missouri Mavericks announced today that veteran Kansas City sportscaster Joel Goldberg will handle play-by-play duties for the “Friday Night Ice” television broadcasts of Mavericks hockey on KSMO-TV (Channel 62) this season.
Mavericks assistant coach and director of skill development Simon Watson will handle color commentary for the second season in a row.
“We are ecstatic to have Joel Goldberg as our television play-by-play announcer this season,” Mavericks general manager Brent Thiessen said. “He is a well-known and loved broadcaster in the Kansas City area and he is well-versed in hockey play-by-play with his prior experience calling collegiate games. He, along with Simon Watson, will really elevate our television product this season.”
Goldberg, who has been attending recent Maverick practice sessions at the Silverstein Eye Centers is ready to make the switch from Royals baseball to hockey.
"I'm thrilled to join the Mavericks family and call their televised games this season,” Goldberg said in a press release. “The Mavericks have become a premier organization in the region and I hope I can add to the fans enjoyment of this exciting experience."
Goldberg just wrapped up work on his ninth season of Kansas City Royals baseball as the host of the “Royals Live” pregame and postgame shows on Fox Sports Kansas City. He joined FSKC’s Royals coverage in 2008 after three years in St. Louis working for Fox Sports Midwest covering the Cardinals, Blues and Rams. He has also worked as a sports anchor and reporter in St. Louis, Rhinelander, Wis., and Madison, Wis.
Goldberg has spent the last two years handling television play-by-play for NCAA hockey on the American Sports Network.
The Mavericks’ “Friday Night Ice” television broadcasts are on KSMO for the second consecutive year and feature expanded coverage from the 2015-16 season. All eight Friday home games, and the annual New Year’s Eve contest, will be broadcast live on KSMO with a half-hour pregame show leading up to each game.
All Friday home games will start at 7:35 p.m. and New Year’s Eve will start with the traditional 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
TRADE: The Mavericks have traded defenseman Samuel Noreau to Norfolk Tuesday for future considerations.
The team also said that defenseman Gus Young was recalled by the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, an affiliate of the St. Louis Blues.
